On July 17, 2014, BRACE Law Firm and the Center for Legal Research in Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Regulatory Environments within the Faculty of Law at the National Research University Higher School of Economics hosted a joint roundtable discussion titled "Patent Protection for Pharmaceuticals."
Roman Shabrov, Partner at BRACE Law Firm, moderated the roundtable session.
The event featured presentations from the following keynote speakers:
• Pavel Sadovsky (Senior Associate, Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners) delivered an address on: Current Challenges in Patent Protection for Pharmaceuticals.
• Vladimir Dementiev (Partner and Russian Patent Attorney, Gowlings) presented on: The Impact of Civil Code Amendments on Patent Protection for Pharmaceuticals.
• Vladislav Ugryumov (Partner, Russian Patent Attorney, and Eurasian Patent Attorney, Gowlings) spoke regarding: Intellectual Property Protection in the Pharmaceutical Industry: Patent Disputes.
• Galina Sekareva (Head of the Legal Department, CJSC BIOCAD) examined: Data Exclusivity as an Alternative Method for Safeguarding the Rights of Original Drug Manufacturers.
• Dmitry Mazaev (Associate Professor, National Research University Higher School of Economics) analyzed: The Principle of Balancing Interests in Executing Patent Protection for Pharmaceuticals: Theory and Enforcement Practice.
The following experts joined the panel as designated discussants:
• Dmitry Afanasiev (Head of the Department for Judicial Practice Analysis, Legislation, and Statistics at the Intellectual Property Rights Court);
• Nina Belozertseva (Legal and Regulatory Director, Innovative Pharma).
Following the formal briefings and panel interventions, the floor opened for an expansive plenary debate regarding the regulatory and legal complexities of pharmaceutical patent protection. Attendees actively contributing to the debate included life sciences executives, legal scholars, government authorities, compliance experts, consulting practitioners, and trade journalists.
